CURRENT POSITION AND RESEARCH

Senior Research Scientist of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) at the Centro de Astrobiología (CAB). Also, he is the Co-Founder and Co-Responsible (CSIC/CAB) for the Research Associated Unit (CSIC-University of Valladolid) on "Raman and Infrared Spectroscopy in Cosmogeochemistry and Astrobiology", Member of the Research Group (Complutense University-Comunidad de Madrid "Metallogenetic processes in magmatic and hydrothermal systems", Member of the Research Group (University of Valladolid) "Raman and Infrared spectroscopy in crystals and minerals", Co-I of the NASA Mars Science Laboratory- REMS and ESA-ExoMars Raman-LIBS, Member (astrobiology chapter) of ESA-TANDEM (ESA Cosmic Vision), and scientific collaborator in ESA-BepiColombo and  STONE/Lithopanspermia.

Martinez-Frias has participated in 32 scientific projects (in 10 as PI) institutionally and financially supported by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science, IUGS/UNESCO, ICSU, ESF, CAB, NATO, ESA and NASA. Among others he has participated: a) in the Scientific Antarctic Expedition "HYDRODEC" to the Deception island (Antarctica) to study volcanism-related mineralizing hydrothermalism (Mars analogs); b) in the study of various fossil and modern hydrothermal and hydrocarbon systems (mainly related with sulphide and oxide mineralization: Hiendelaencina, Jaroso, Gulf of Cadiz, Taganana, etc); c) in the NASA flight to study the Leonid meteor shower (Leonid MAC project); d) as member of the Spanish Science team of the M.A.R.T.E. project (NASA Group Achievement Award); d) in two scientific expeditions to Iceland (2006 and 2007, hydrothermalism/mineralization (Mars analogs) and e) in the scientific expedition Mauritania’ 2007  to study meteoritic impact craters. Also, he has carried out research studies on different types of meteorites: a) ordinary chondrites: Cañellas, Olmedilla de Alarcón, Olivenza, Reliegos, Nulles and Valencia); b) carbonaceous chondrites (Allende); c) Martian meteorites (Nakhla); stony-irons (Vaca Muerta), and irons (Toluca) as well as pseudometeorites (Getafe). In addition, he has pioneered the study of the atmospheric ice falls (megacryometeors), coining the term and laying the foundations for their research. 

THESES SUPERVISIONS AND EVALUATIONS

Martinez-Frias has supervised various Spanish PhD theses and postgraduate projects (e.g. Valencia meteorite, Spanish chondrites, extreme environments (methane-related (bio)mineralization) and he has been external evaluator of four Doctor rerum naturalium (Universitat Innsbruck, Austria). At present he is supervising three PhD thesis related with meteorites, Mars exploration and terrestrial analogs. He has been Evaluator in the FP6 European Program (and registered for FP7). Referee for the NATO Science Program, the Spanish and Argentinean Evaluation Agencies, the Academy of Finland, National Geographic and various prestigious scientific SCI journals (e.g. Icarus). He has been Reviewer of the European EURYI and EUROCORE programs. Also, he has been scientific supervisor of various Areas of the new Laboratory for the Simulation of Evolution in Interstellar and Planetary Environments (CAB). At present he forms part of the European Science Foundation pool of reviewers.

He is the author of the book "Sulfides and Sulfosalts of Noble Metals" (Edit. CSIC, 302 p) and co-editor of several books, among which are; "Spanish Mineral Resources" (Edit. CSIC, 1478 p), "Geology and Metallogeny of Seafloor Hydrothermal Deposits) (IEO, 162 p), " Esto es Imposible " (Aguilar, 320p) and "Meteoritos y Geología Planetaria" (Diputación Provincial de Cuenca, JCCM, 2005).. 

In addition, he has presented more than 150 contributions in Spanish and international congresses. Likewise, he has directed or participated in the Steering Committee of the following congresses: 3rd European Exo/Astrobiology Conference, Symposium for the Scientific Commemoration in Spain of the First Lunar Landing (1969-1999), scientific homage symposium to Carl Sagan, First Iberian Congress of Meteorites and Planetary Geology, First Spanish workshop on Astromineralogy and Space Mineralogy, VII Geological Congress of Spain, Impact craters as indicators for planetary environmental evolution and astrobiology and VII Iberian Congress of Geochemistry).

Martinez-Frias has given many invited talks in Spain (Universities, Research Institutes, ICOG, University Summer Courses, Science Museum and Parks, etc), Portugal (Castello Branco and Lisboa-The Planetary Society and Natural History Museum), Germany (University of Heidelberg), Canada (University of Toronto), USA (UCSD-La Jolla, Cervantes Institute), Austria (University of Innsbruck), Mexico (Centro de la Energía and Instituto de Ciencias Nucleares/Sociedad Mexicana de Astrobiología), and France (Nancy University). 

Also, he has participated as scientific advisor in numerous national and international scientific (public outreach) fairs and exhibitions, among them the “Exposición Mineralógica de los Hermanos Heuland a Chile y Perú” e “IberoAmérica IV en tren” (Fifth Centenary Commission), the exhibition entitled “Meteoritos” (National Museum of Natural Sciences), the new area for "Space Exploration" of the Science Museum of Castilla-La Mancha and the international EXPOS: EXPO 2005 Aichí, Japón  and EXPO Agua Zaragoza 2008 (Water Tower). 

INTERNATIONAL AND NATIONAL BOARDS

Martinez-Frias was Expert Member of the ‘Natural Resources Committee’ of the United Nations (ECOSOC, 1998), representing Western Europe, and he was (from 1998 to 2001) Elected Member of the "Science Advisory Committee" of the Higher Research Council of Spain (CSIC). He has been Spanish representative and Vice-Chair in the UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development (1999-2000 and 2001-2003) and a Member of the UNCSTD Gender Advisory Board. Also he was Member of the Science Jury for the PanHispanic Prize of Specialized Translation, Member of the Committee of the "IMPACT", “Investigating Life in Extreme Environments" and “ELIPS” programmes of the European Science Foundation (2005-2008) and Member of the Spanish Academic Comittee of the "XVII Bienal de la Real Sociedad Española de Historia Natural" (2007).  He was appointed as Co-Chair of the NASA Astrobiology Institute Mars Focus Group (2006-2008) and Member of the editorial board of the prestigious SCI journal “Interdisciplinary Science Reviews” (2003-2008). Since its foundation, he has been Head and main promoter of the Planetary Geology Laboratory of the Centro de Astrobiologia (2000-2008). At present, he is the Regional Co-ordinator of The Planetary Society in Spain (since 2002), Coordinator of the Scientific Area of Planetary Geology of the Spanish "Ilustre Colegio Oficial de Geólogos” (Spanish Official Association of Geologists) (since its foundation), CAB's Representative in the Federation of Astrobiology Organizations (FAO) (since 2003) and Member of the Honour Jury for the San Viator Prize of Research in Science and Humanities (since 2003). Recently (2009) he was appointed as Expert Member of the “Spirit of Innovation Awards” (Conrad Foundation).

SCIENTIFIC SOCIETIES AND ASSOCIATIONS

He is a member of several scientific societies and associations (e.g. Fulbright Academy of Science and Technology, European Astrobiology Network Association, International Astronomical Union, The Planetary Society, European Association for Geochemistry, SIGMA XI: The Scientific Research Society, Geological Society of Spain, World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology, EuroPlanet) and he has been a member of the Steering Committee of the Association of Spanish Scientists. He is founder and co-administrator of the RedIris' virtual communy (Thematic Network): TIERRA (Earth sciences in Spain) and co-founded the journal of the Spanish Association of Scientists Acta Científica y Tecnológica. Also he has founded and co-ordinates two scientific lists, which are distributed electronically on the Spanish Academic and Scientific Network (RedIris): RENANET: a scientific- technological forum on natural resources, and MERGE: a forum on meteorites and planetary geology).
